SEXUAL HARASSMENT: ABM to Pay $5.8 M to Settle Sexual Harassment Lawsuit
September 2, 2010
Fresno - ABM Janitorial Services has agreed to pay about $5.8 million to settle a sexual harassment suit filed against it by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), said reports.
According to EEOC attorneys, at least 21 female employees were sexually harassed by their male co-employees and supervisors from 2001 to 2009 at work sites in Bakersfield, Merced, Visalia, and Fresno. They also alleged that one female employee was even raped.
The complaints of female employees were often ignored by managers. Most of them were terminated after voicing out their grievances, claimed EEOC attorneys.
ABM denied any wrongdoing, though it agreed to settle the case. It claimed that practices and policies against sexual harassment have been followed for years.
Reports said the company also agreed to provide an anti-harassment training and place a telephone hotline for worker complaints.
