EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION: Amtrak Faces EEOC Discrimination Suit
February 1, 2011
Philadelphia – The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed charges against Amtrak, the country’s largest rail company, after it was found discriminating against its human resources regional director because of her sex, reports said.
The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, known as Amtrak, reportedly paid its employee, Sheila Davidson, lower wages than her male co-employees since she was hired in 2001, in spite of having a greater workload and more relevant working experience than them.
The EEOC said Amtrak also violated other federal laws such as Title VII and the Equal Pay Act when it retaliated against Davidson after she filed a discrimination complaint against the company. Barring her from attending staff meetings is just one of the retaliatory actions taken by the company against her.
EEOC Regional Attorney Debra Lawrence said the company clearly violated Davidson’s right to equal pay. The suit should be an example to other employers to stop taking discriminatory or harassing actions against their employees, she added.
