Animal Attack
Animal attacks and dog bite incidents have increased recently. Statistics show that nearly 4.7 million people are bitten by dogs each year, excluding other cases of animal attack incidents.
By law, victims of animal attacks and dog bites are entitled to recover for damages against the animal owner or any responsible party. However, in some cases, animal owners are not the only party who may be held liable for injuries caused by their caused by animals or pets.
- Animal keepers – This include those responsible for the care and custody of the animal such as kennels, pound or animal sitter
- Parent of minors – In some states, parents may be held accountable for pet animals owned by their children
- Landlords – An apartment landlord can be held liable for injuries from an animals or dogs that his tenant owns
- Property owners – A property owner can be held responsible for injuries caused by an animal allowed within his property or premises
Recovery for damages in an animal attack incident may include the following:
- Compensation for medical expenses
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
- Damage to property, if any
In some instances, when the party at-fault showed more than negligence, such as reckless or intentional conduct, the victim may also be entitled to punitive damages.
