Employment Law: Budget Cuts Forces LAPD Special Units Officers to Patrol Duty

February 17, 2010

Los Angeles -- Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck has announced that about 350 of his special units officers would have to go back to patrol duty because of the department’s overtime cuts.

In a monthly conference, Beck said that he is forced to transfer some 170 officers from the Metro, Gang and Narcotics units and about 180 more in the coming months to fill the gaps. The cuts are said to be necessary in avoiding an almost 8% cuts in the department’s workforce.

The police chief expressed his concerns regarding the efficiency of the recent changes in the department and is reluctant to set an attainable crime reduction goal for the current year.
