December 18, 2009

Sacramento - The state’s unemployment rate in November fell by 12.3 percent from 12.5 percent a month earlier, according to the Department of Economic Development report.

Despite the slight improvement in the labor market, California has the third highest unemployment rate in the country, following the lead of Michigan and Rhode Island.

Meanwhile, a data from the US Employment Development Department (EDD) shows a slight job growth in construction industry, professional and business services, mining, logging, information technology, and other services, generating about 13,500 jobs last month.

However, some industries had experienced significant job losses including financial services, leisure and hospitality, government, education and health services, transportation and utilities, trade, and manufacturing which shed a total of 23,700 jobs during the same month.

In a latest government survey, more than 2.2 people in California were unemployed in November, excluding 111,000 individuals who have given up finding jobs, and 500,000 part-time workers and employees with low-paying jobs.

The survey also shows that Imperial County in Southern California has a 29.2 percent unemployment rate, the highest in the state. Meanwhile, Marin County has the lowest jobless rate at 8 percent.
