CAR ACCIDENT: Car Slides Off the Road; Driver Saved by Tree Blocking an Embankment
March 19, 2011
Lafayette – A perfectly placed tree blocked a car from falling down an embankment after an accident Saturday afternoon, Morinaga-Orinda officials said.
The male driver of the Nissan 300 ZX was traveling on Taylor Boulevard at about 1:45 pm when his car slid off the road upon reaching the 1600 block. Just as it was about to fall down the steep embankment, it slammed into a tree in front, Division Chief Darrell Lee said.
The unnamed driver could have dropped from an embankment that is approximately 300 feet high. Rescuers from the Fire Protection Department had to use the "Jaws of Life" to rescue the man.
He was conscious and already talking to medical personnel when he was taken away by an ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. He suffered head injuries.
The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the reason why the car lost control. Lee presumes that the limited visibility caused by heavy rains may have been a factor.
