Consumer Agency Monitors Web Sites to Stop Selling of Recalled Products
September 17, 2009
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is monitoring online retail stores such as eBay, Craigslist, and Amazon.com to prevent recalled products from reaching consumers who are looking for discounted items on the Internet.
This measure is in line with the new bill “Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act” that enforces stricter standards for children’s toys and makes selling and distribution of recalled products a federal crime.
Meanwhile, the consumer agency’s Internet surveillance team is working with popular online retail store eBay to filter defective products and other hazardous goods which are mostly sold by online users.
In a statement, eBay Spokeswoman Evonne Gomez said the online retail store is taking steps to “protect web-centric consumers from buying dangerous products, especially toys.”
“We are also giving relevant information about recalled products to eBay customers so they will know what they should not buy. The online store will also ban products which are declared hazardous by the consumer agency”, Gomez said.
Apart from protecting online users, CPSC Spokesman Patty Davis said the consumer agency will provide thrift store owners and employees with training on how to identify a potentially dangerous product.
CPSC will also conduct unannounced safety checks on thrift stores and discounted shops.
