PRODUCT LIABILITY: Consumers Warned on Health Effects of 7 Caffeinated Alcoholic Beverages

November 17, 2010

Washington DC – The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned consumers against the ill-effects of seven caffeinated alcoholic beverages on health, reports said.

The warning was issued after FDA told the manufacturers that their drinks have caused a ‘public health concern’. The federal agency also gave the companies 15 days to reformulate their products or face seizure.

Tests conducted by the agency showed that the products contain caffeine which can mask the effects of alcohol, leaving the consumer unaware of being intoxicated.

The warning was issued following complaints received by the agency from several states which led to a review in November 2009. In October of the same year, nine underage students from Central Washington University were hospitalized after drinking a popular beverage.

Among the companies that were issued warning included the San Diego, CA-based United Brands which manufactures the Joose and Max brands; Charge Beverage Corporation which sells Core High Gravity HG, Core High Gravity HG Orange, and Lemon Lime Core Spiked; and New Century Brewing which makes Moonshot.

The companies, however, announced that they are dropping caffeine and two other ingredients, guarana and taurine from their products.
