Drug-resistant Salmonella Found in Beef, Health Regulators Announce a Recall

December 7, 2009

Fresno, California - Health regulators have announced a recall on Friday that covers thousands of ground beef which tested positive with Salmonella Newport, a drug-resistant strain of bacteria.

In a statement, the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said the beef products made by Beef Packer’s Inc. have been linked to two cases of salmonella infection in Arizona.

Health regulators said the recall covers nearly 23,000 pounds of ground beef products which include beef patties, stuffed peppers, and meat balls. The “date of manufacture” of the recalled products bear Sept. 28 and October and had been sold in Arizona and New Mexico.

Last August, the Fresno-based company has also announced a recall over salmonella scare. According to reports, 39 people were hospitalized after experiencing severe diarrhea, vomiting, and cramps -manifestations of Salmonella Newport infection which is a strain of bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics and can be life-threatening especially to children and people with weak immune system.

Meanwhile, Beef Packers has been a major supplier of beef products for the National School Lunch Program. However, the government suspended its contract with the company for repeatedly failing the federal food safety standards.
