Falling-TV Deaths Increase Despite Flat Screen's Popularity
December 14, 2009
Washington - While 53 percent of American households own flat screen television which is lighter compared to the traditional model, the number of injuries and deaths caused by falling TV has significantly increased over the past several years, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
According to its report conducted between 2000 and 2006, the consumer agency estimated 180 deaths and 42,700 injuries associated with appliance, majority of these were caused by unstable TV set falling and pinning down victims, especially small children.
The CPSC also estimated that 87 deaths were linked to falling TV set during the same period.
In a separate study, researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio found that 18.8 per 100,000 people in 1990 have been injured due to falling furniture, majority of the cases involved TV. But in 2007, the rate increased by 22.9 per 100,000 individuals.
“Such accident has now been increasingly becoming common nowadays”, Smith said.
Meanwhile, Consumer Electronics Association Spokeswoman Megan Pollock believe that the increasing number of deaths and injuries caused by falling TV set is linked to a consumer’s attitude of putting old TV to flimsy dresser or table.
“While more than half of American households are using flat screen models, most of them are still keeping their old TVs in bedrooms and garage areas, and placing these on top of unstable furniture”, Pollock said.
