PRODUCT RECALL: Fear of Salmonella Outbreak triggers Nationwide Recall of Eggs

August 19, 2010

Washington DC – The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned the public of the possible nationwide outbreak of salmonella poisoning which led to the massive recall of eggs recently. The outbreak was the considered to be the largest of its type related to eggs in years.

The recall was made after the agency has received reports that more than 250 people recently fell ill in at least four states. Federal officials said there were nearly 2,000 reports of salmonella poisoning from May to July.

The agency tracked the outbreak to contaminated eggs from an Iowa-based company, which also launched the nationwide recall. The eggs were distributed to wholesalers and food-service companies under the multiple brand names of Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps.

Health officials reported that at least 226 Californians, 28 people from Colorado and 7 in Minnesota have become victims of the salmonella-contaminated eggs. Cases of salmonella poisoning were also reported in Arizona, Illinois, Nevada, North Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin.

The company, however, cooperated with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) during the investigation.

The FDA also advised consumers to keep eggs refrigerated and properly cooked.

Harmful bacteria such as salmonella can cause fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea that usually last from four to seven days.
