Furloughs for Correctional Officers Found Illegal

December 17, 2009

Sacramento - A Superior Court Judge in Alameda has ruled in favor of a lawsuit filed by correctional officers against the imposed furloughs ordered by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

A month after the lawsuit has been filed, Judge Frank Roesch decided that it is unlawful for some 40,000 state prison officers to wait for their time off while they receive reduced pays.

According to the judge’s orders, the governor must immediately pay the unutilized furlough credits worked for by employees who are represented by their respective unions.

Sources say the decision is expected to be appealed by the state.
