Google, Yahoo, Other Technology Giants Face Patent Lawsuit

October 7, 2009

Several technology giants including Yahoo, Google, Apple, Adobe Systems, Amazon.com, and eBay are facing patent infringement lawsuit for allegedly using some inventions of technology research firms.

Eolas Technologies filed a lawsuit before the US Eastern District of Texas alleging that the defendants violated its patented technologies that were developed 15 years ago.

According to the lawsuit, the defendants violated two of Eolas’s patented technologies, including a program that allows website to add embedded applications through the use of asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) and plug-ins.

Eolas is also asking for a court injunction that will prevent the defendants from using the said applications. The company is also seeking treble damages, which is triple the amount of the actual damage caused by the alleged infringement activities.

In a statement, Eolas Chairman Michael Doyle said the company will not allow anyone to infringe its technologies and inventions. The chairman said they will resort to legal actions against the other firms.

Meanwhile, Eolas Chief Executive Mark Swords said it is unfair that the other companies are using their inventions “without giving compensation to Eolas.”

In 2003, a court ruling asked Microsoft to pay Eolas with $520.6 million for infringing its patented technologies.
