Google Wins in Trademark Dispute Against Louis Vuitton
September 22, 2009
US technology giant Google Inc. has won in a court battle against French retailer Louis Vuitton over trademark infringement. Four years ago, the retailer sued Google after its trademark symbol appeared on its rival’s sponsored links.
In a ruling handed down by the European Court of Justice, Google did not infringe Louis Vuitton’s trademark by “simply allowing advertisers to purchase keywords that correspond to some registered trademarks.”
In a statement, Google Legal Counsel Harjinder Obhi said they “believe that selecting keywords that will be associated to an ad does not amount to trademark infringement since this is a strategy that will allow consumers to find relevant information on the Internet.’
Few years ago, a court in France ruled that Google committed an infringement. This decision was overturned when the US technology giant appealed its case.
