Law on Workers’ Extended Unemployment Benefits Signed

November 6, 2009

Washington - The unemployment benefits provided to thousands of workers who are about to or have already exhausted it will now be extended after President Barack Obama signed a bill that will allow such privilege.

The new law will now provide up to 14 weeks of extended benefits to every state and up to 20 weeks in states that have high unemployment rate, including California.

However, it is possible that Californians will only receive up to 14 weeks of extended benefits because a sunset provision at the end of the present year was included in an earlier bill, stated California officials.

The bill is projected to aid up to two million Americans who are about to be removed from the unemployment rolls at the end of the year or have already exhausted their benefits. Statistics show that about 170,000 workers are affected in California alone.

Officials from the state Employment Development Department said that though Obama has already signed the bill making it a law, it will take a number of weeks before computers can be re-programmed and checks can be issued.

Aside from extending unemployment benefits, the bill will also expand and extend the $8,000 tax credit of the first time home buyers and it will also allow businesses to enjoy a provision that reduces their operating losses.
