EMPLOYMENT LAW: Legislature Approves Bill that can End Cal Worker Layoffs

March 8, 2010

Sacramento - A Democrat bill has been approved by the California Legislature which will lift the “3-day-a-month” furloughs that affect around 80,000 state workers.

According to reports, this step was done to invalidate at least 200,000 state employee furloughs, which was implemented by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The bill will cover employees whose salary is acquired from user fees, the federal government, or other sources that are not funded by the state.

However, this bill will only be implemented once it was signed by the governor, who is unlikely to be in favor of it, said reports.

It was argued that these furloughs cost California more than the amount it saves from wages because both state money collectors and auditors spend lesser time at work.
