Maclaren Aware of Strollers’ Defect for Years, Failed to Announce Immediate Recall

November 13, 2009

Maclaren has been aware for five years that its strollers have a defective hinge system which can amputate fingers but failed to immediately initiate a product recall, according to a report by the New York Post.

Last week, health regulators had forced the company to announce a massive recall that covers approximately one million Maclaren strollers all over the country. The recalled products were distributed by retail giants Target and Babies "R'' Us.

With its failure to announce an immediate recall even after knowing the amputation risk, the UK-based company may be slapped with more than $1 million fines.

The federal consumer law requires companies “to immediately report a substandard and dangerous product to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)”.

According to previous reports, 12 children in the US have their fingers accidentally cut-off by the strollers’ hinge system.

Meanwhile, the product recall has now been extended to Canada to prevent further incidents of finger amputation.
