EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION: NC-Based Store Settles Religious Discrimination Case, Agrees to Pay $55,000

March 16, 2011

North Carolina– Belk, Inc. has agreed to pay $55,000 and to provide other relief in order to settle a religious discrimination case that was filed against it by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

The agency alleged that during the Christmas season last 2008, the management at Belk’s Crabtree Valley Mall store in Raleigh required an employee Myra Jones-Abid to wear a Santa apron and hat.

However, she refused to follow the order because her religion, Jehovah’s Witnesses, does not recognize holidays. EEOC said Jones-Abid was terminated on November 27, 2008 because of it.

Aside from paying Jones-Abid, the company also agreed to provide annual religious discrimination training to all supervisors and managers at the store where the victim was previously employed.
