SEXUAL HARASSMENT: NJ Mayor Denies Sexual Harassment Claims

March 4, 2011

East Orange, New Jersey – Mayor Robert L. Bowser has denied all sexual harassment allegations made against by him by his female research assistant, as stated on a complaint she filed last February 18.

“Let me say with absolute clarity, no sexual harassment of any kind took place,” Bowser said at press conference last March 4. Bowser added that he and his administration would fully cooperate with investigations being conducted by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and an independent outside attorney, which he personally initiated through Corporation Counsel.

The harassment claim made by Corletta Hicks against Mayor Bowser was made public on February 22, a day before he left for Nigeria to attend a mayor’s conference, but the details remain unknown. He returned Thursday night, March 3.

During the press conference, the mayor also denied paying personal travel expenses for Hicks using the City’s money. Bowser said that it was Hicks who erroneously sought reimbursement from the city, instead of submitting his expenses records to conference officials as he had instructed. The error has been corrected, according to the mayor.

Bowser, upon his arrival, has signed the resolution that would allow the council to hire two outside firms, including a forensic auditor, to investigate the claims made by Hicks.
