WORKPLACE SAFETY: OSHA to Conduct Hearing to Revise Rules on Slip, Trip and Fall Hazards

November 12, 2010

Washington – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is set to hold informal public hearings on rules that will revise the Walking-Working Surfaces and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) standards starting on January 18 this coming year, an official statement from the agency website said.

The rules will be revised to improve worker safety and protection from slip, trip, and fall hazards.

According to the press statement, the proposed rule will also help prevent and reduce incidents of these types of accidents as the agency noted that nearly 20 cases of workplace fatalities and more than 3,700 injury cases are reported each year.

OSHA Assistant Secretary Dr David Michaels said, “Injuries and fatalities from fall hazards are a leading cause of work-related injuries and we need to have best rule po9ssible to ensure that we effectively address this serious hazard”.

The proposed revisions will include criteria for personal fall protection equipment which comply with industry voluntary consensus standards. These rules are also expected to complement OSHA’s general industry walking-walking surfaces standards with construction and shipyard industry standards.

The hearing will begin on the said date at around 9:30 am at the US Department of Labor office in 200 Constitution Avenue, Washington DC.
