PERSONAL INJURY: Pringle’s Recalled Over Salmonella Scare

March 9, 2010

Cincinnati, Ohio - Procter & Gamble has recently announced a recall on Tuesday that covers Pringle’s that contains a flavor-enhancer ingredient found to be tainted with salmonella, food regulators said.

The company said the “recalled chips come in taco and cheeseburger flavors and contain hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP)”, a flavor-enhancer ingredient which was manufactured by Basic Food Flavors, Inc.

According to reports, all the food products that contain the said ingredient are being recalled after one customer of Basic Food Flavors conducted a routine test and found the bacterium.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has conducted its own investigation and found that the company’s facilities were contaminated with salmonella.

Currently, 26 brands have already been recalled including salad dressing, dip, soup, snack mix, and other ready-to-eat foods. Safety regulators are expecting the list would continue to grow as FDA is still investigating the issue.

In a statement, FDA spokesperson Rita Chappelle said most of the recalled products are ready-to-eat foods which means that preparation for these does not include cooking which could eliminate salmonella.

However, Chappelle said the recalled products pose “low risk” since there has been no reported illness related to HPV.
