Suffolk Agreed To Monitor Students Credit Ratings
October 5, 2009
Islip, New York – Authorities said that New York’s Suffolk Community College agreed to monitor the credit ratings of the students whose Social Security numbers were accidentally released last September 17.
The incident happened when the last names and the Social Security numbers of 300 students were inadvertently included in an attachment to an email sent to the students, said Mary Lou Araeno, the college’s vice-president.
The college will be paying Trans Union for the next year, to monitor the credit ratings of the 300 students even though there is no sign that any of the information has been misused, Araeno added.
Araeno however declined to comment if the college will be liable if any of the student’s information has been misused.
College officials could not also say the cost of monitoring and Trans Union officials were not available for comment.
