Target Agrees to Pay $600,000 Civil Penalty for Selling Lead-tainted Toys
October 3, 2009
Washington D.C. - Retail giant Target Corp. has agreed to pay a $600,000 civil penalty for selling toys and children’s products which are tainted with lead, a chemical that can cause lower IQ, muscle weakness, and digestive problems if a person is exposed over a long period of time., the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced recently.
The consumer agency said the retail store has “knowingly imported and sold several toys with paints that contain high levels of lead which exceed the legal limit.”
“Target has failed to check if the toys and children’s products have lead coatings, thus exposing children to lead poisoning and adverse health effects caused by this harmful chemical”, CPSC added.
In a statement, CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum said the penalty imposed on Target “is a reminder to all importers and retailers that they have the obligation to follow the same lead limits imposed on manufacturers.”
While Target agrees to pay the civil penalty, the company said it did not violate any federal law and denied CPSC’s allegations.
