EMPLOYMENT LAW: Tax Form Error Sparks Identity Theft Scare for Unemployed Coloradans

January 28, 2010

Denver, Colorado – A computer error almost sparked panic about widespread identity theft when about 2,000 people received tax forms with the wrong names printed on them.

Colorado officials are now trying to reassure these people that there was no harm done after a computer glitch caused the computer to print the wrong names on their 1099G forms.

The state says that no real threat came out of the error as only the names were misprinted and not the social security numbers.

According to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, the glitch may have been caused by the record-high number of unemployed people last year.

The 1099G forms are for people who received unemployment benefits last year.

Corrected forms were mailed yesterday.
