Teen Dies in Crash an Hour before Birthday
January 6, 2010
San Diego – A City Heights boy would have turned 17 Wednesday were it not for a fatal accident that also resulted in the injury of four other occupants of a vehicle that went off a freeway ramp, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.
The California Highway Patrol said the 16-year-old boy was reportedly riding at the rear passenger seat of a westbound Toyota sedan travelling along Interstate 8 at around 8pm Tuesday night when it hit a wall and plunged some 100 feet before rolling over and landing on a transition road leading to Interstate 5.
Responding officers found the boy alive but ejected from the car as they extricate four female occupants including the 23-year-old driver, two passengers aged 18, and another 19-year-old. The driver as well as the front seat passenger were said to be wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash while the other three did not.
All five occupants were taken to a hospital to be treated for various injuries including broken bones and internal injuries. The boy died past 11 pm, an hour away from the day he would have celebrated his 17th birthday.
Identities of all those involved are yet to be released as authorities continue to investigate the accident that didn’t appear to be caused by alcohol nor drugs.
