Tyler Perry Faces Copyright Infringement Case for Overly Praising Jesus
November 26, 2009
Los Angeles - A lawsuit was filed by a representative of the deceased gospel singer and songwriter Bertha James against Tyler Perry, alleging that Perry used a complete verse from a song that James had written in 1950.The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court in Central Los Angeles.
The suit claimed that Perry stole the verse from “When I Think of the Goodness of Jesus,” and used it in the movie “Madea”.
Reports said the song’s entire chorus was incorporated in a monologue that was delivered by the movie’s main character “Madea,” while referring to her release from prison sentence and clemency for recurring criminal conduct during a staged court proceeding.
The singer’s estate is also suing Lionsgate Entertainment and wants to receive indefinite damages for the violation committed.
